Basically, it's necessary to differentiate between whether these degrees are awarded by a university (Bachelor's or Master's, Diplom, Magister, etc.) or by a state examination office ("Staatsexamen") or by a church examination office ("kirchliche Prüfung"). As a rule, the final examinations which students take lead to a degree with professional qualification. Intermediate ("Zwischenprüfung") and pre-Diplom ("Vordiplom") examinations do not constitute academic degrees in Germany.
